A tornado passed over the building I work in.
The beginning of this summer in May, there was a tornado that went over the building that I work in, it's as close as I ever want to be to a tornado. Way too close for comfort, and I had never been in a tornado before, although I have had some close calls. I've seen funnel clouds up close and touch and go tornadoes from a far, but I've never been directly under a tornado before, prior to this. It started out as a normal workday and in the South it's not uncommon to get thunderstorms especially with the humidity that we have here. I love a good thunderstorm, when I was younger, I really wanted to be a meteorologist, but math was never one of my gifts. Anyhow, we were under a severe thunderstorm watch and I was on my lunch break. I was eating in my car when I saw black clouds moving very quickly from behind our building. Knowing that we were under a watch I quickly got inside before the storm hit. As soon I got inside, we had a blackout, and all of the lights turned off. I looked out of our employee glass door into the parking lot where I had just been, and it looked like a tornado. The trees were all bent over, and the wind and rain were moving so fast, all I could think was, that looks like a tornado. I braced for the worst and quickly went into the hallway that we were taught to shelter in if we ever have a tornado. All I could hear was the wind and rain and it sounded like it would if you were on a ship at sea and there was a ferocious storm. I was the only one sheltering in the back because when the lights turned off, customers and employees weren't expecting it and now couldn't see their way to safety. The storm moved so fast that it was gone as quickly as it hit, in minutes. It took down multiple trees in our parking lot and part of our roof, but we were very fortunate that it wasn't worse than that. On my drive home I also saw more damage from the storm that left telephone poles snapped in half like match sticks. When I moved to Kentucky it was right before Mayfield had a major tornado and damage, so I knew immediately to take tornado warnings seriously here. I still do and am thankful that it wasn't worse.
